this friday, i depart on a 10-day trip, arriving in mexico city and continuing down to chiapas.
chiapas, in the highlands of southern mexico, is a textile-mecca. the weavings and embroideries of the area’s indigenous people portray a rich mayan legacy and speak a symbolic language, telling stories through design + motif + color.
i’m hugely looking forward to the inspiration i’ll find in the artisans and the markets and the landscapes.
and i’m truly honored to have chip morris, one of the greatest specialists in the region’s textile art, curating and guiding the journey.
(chip is the author of the superb new book “a textile guide to the highlands of chiapas”, from which the images in the collage above are excerpted. the book is not, unfortunately, available outside of mexico. while in san cristobal, we’ll be working through a system for anyone interested to be able to purchase the book via l’aviva home, and we’ll be sending a shipment back with us to distribute. please email studio@lavivahome.com if you are interested in more details on this count…).
as always, i’ll be sharing favorite finds + experiences here… more soon…
